Isabelle Haak was the hero for Sweden in an electrifying quarterfinal match against Mexico at the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup, held in Laval, France. Following a heart-stopping performance by Haak, Sweden now advances to the semifinals, where they will face a robust Colombian side that successfully overcame Kenya.

Sweden faced a daunting task as Mexico seized the initial two sets, imposing their dominance on the game. However, led by the formidable Haak, the Swedes orchestrated a stunning 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-5) comeback, securing their spot in the semifinals.

With an awe-inspiring personal tally of 33 points, Isabelle Haak was the linchpin for Sweden’s dramatic turnaround. Her sister Anna and Alexandra Lazic each contributed a valuable 12 points, aiding their team’s victory. On the Mexican side, Andrea Rangel topped the score sheet with 22 points, and teammates Grecia Castro and Aimé Topete added 15 and 13 points respectively.

In the second quarterfinal of the day, Colombia displayed their mettle against Kenya, winning 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19), securing their ticket to the semifinals. Colombian duo Ana Karina Olaya and Amanda Coneo excelled, each contributing 17 points to the victory. From Kenya, Sharon Chepchumba led the scoring with 28 points, with additional support from Belinda Barasa, who contributed another 12 points.

The thrilling semifinal fixture between Sweden and Colombia is scheduled for this Saturday, promising a captivating contest as both teams vie for a spot in the Volleyball Nations League 2024.
